Paris Non- Touristy Sites

I am stopping off in Paris for 2 full days only and I have not been there since I studied there when I was 18. I don%26#39;t want to do any thing touristy- we are thinking of renting bikes, no map, just stopping where we please...Any other suggestions?

Try cycling along the canal st Martin from Place de la Republique, or catching the metro line 1 to chateau de vincennes at the end of line one getting a velib and cycling around the parc.

A great way to see the city.

The possiblities are infinite. Do you have any specific interests?

How about looking for villas? in the rest of France this means a summer home, often by the sea, but in Paris it is a street (often a private one)lined by small single family homes. Private houses are a rarity in Paris where even the very rich live in (huge) apartments.

La Butte aux Cailles in the 13th (metro Corvisart)and the area around rue de la Mouzaia (Buttes-Chaumont neighbourhood) in the 19th (metro Botzaris) are but 2 examples. There are others in Montmartre. They are found in both pricey and working class neighbourhoods.

you could do some laundry, maybe get a haircut... quite %26#39;non-touristy%26#39;... and maybe read up a little on street and traffic signs because you can get a ticket if you don%26#39;t follow road rules.

Eating really good food, really seeing the city, but not the museum/shops part of it- more the architecture. Walking around great little shops away from the Champs.

grndma knows what is good for you. Canal St Martin is a great walk - I think cycling through it would get it over too soon.

I would even start from the Bastille, and the Boulevard Ledru Rollin. Don%26#39;t be shy, interfere in a pétanque play and learn the ropes.

Watch the classic movie %26quot;Hôtel Du Nord%26quot; beforehand, and the quai de Jemmapes will get your head spinning. Stop at the original Hôtel du Nord (on the left bank, on your right when going north) for a cheap beer, and maybe a decent foodie snack.

At the end of the road you will find the great Villette park, and its playful landscaping. If you plan that well, in the summer, you can end up watching a great movie for free - no french dubbing there, just subtitles - on a giant inflated screen.

your on the right track with the laundry, but will be doing those things earlier in the trip when we are in Berlin- anything more original?

Oh that was my rather vague way of implying that anything worth doing is going to be touristy to some degree

Hard to determine exactly what you mean by non-touristy, and to offer any advice as 90+% of us on here are tourists to the city and generally do touristy type things, even if they more or less off the beaten path. People living in Paris, whether long term or short term, are really the only folks on here to aren%26#39;t necessarily %26quot;touring%26quot; a place, etc., because they are working, going to school, and doing all those things (like laundry) that we get to not do, because we%26#39;re on vacation. And I%26#39;m not trying to be flip. I think someone that wants to get away from all the major sites might spend some time having a picnic in a parc far from the city center, or take a drive out to the country and have a nice dinner is some small town. If you are looking for something intriguing, but that might fall into that %26quot;road less traveled%26quot; category, there are several places in Paris that a lot of people on here would consider %26quot;hidden gems%26quot;, but they can probably still be found in many guidebooks or are discussed on here. If you can offer a better idea of how you%26#39;d like to spend your time, the posts on here will be much more valuable to your end game.

FYI, if you want to cycle and you are there on a Sunday, some streets are then reserved to cyclists and pedestrians: expressways by the Seine, Canal Saint-Martin banks, rue de la Roquette, etc. Full list on www.paris.fr click on %26quot;déplacements%26quot;.

Anyway, if you don%26#39;t want any map, there is no point for any of us to suggest you anything. Go with the flow, and this could indeed be what you are looking for.
