We are on a cruise ship which is coming into Marseille on Saturday 29th August. We were hoping to make a visit to Avignon - is it possible? We have 8 hours to spend.
We would appreciate any advice on our plans.

It will take you between 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get to Avignon by train (all inclusive from MRS port to center of Avignon) which will leave you about 4 hours to visit max depending on the times of the trains which may not be at optimal times.
Driving distance is 100km and www.mappy.fr says 1h10mn. So by the time you get the rental car, and add 15/20 mn beacause you don%26#39;t know the road + finding parking in Avignon (challenging) the return trip will take around 3 hours(if you hit no traffic of course).
Up to you to decide if it is worthwhile.
Alternatives are Aix-en-Provence, Marseille or a nice lunch in Cassis and visit the calanques...by boat.
