I will be following up TA posters%26#39; recommendations on liturgical bookshops, I would also like to find an ordinary bookshop too: as a way of getting my brain back into French, after recent holidays in Spain and Germany, I bought %26#39;Le rire de l%26#39;ogre%26#39; by Pierre Peju the other day. Hadn%26#39;t heard of him but it was one of the very few books the shop sold - university town too, shame! - that wasn%26#39;t Camus or Gide (nothing wrong with them, just wanted something more modern) or Harry Potter.
I%26#39;m thoroughly enjoying it and would like to pick up more by him while in Paris. Is he an author one could pick up in railway station type bookshops or should I look for a real bookshop?
Thankyou.

Hi;
If in Paris go the Place St Michel and as you look around 360* you%26#39;ll see book shops on many subjects. Walking south on St Michel towards Luxembourg you%26#39;ll find used bookstores, fiction, philosophy, religion, medicine...

These are the Gibert Jeune bookstores. The one on the Place is basically stationary and paper products.Across the street are the bookshops.

W H Smith on rue Rivoli corner of rue Cambon is the %26quot;English%26quot; bookstore. Then there is Gagliani (spelling) also on rue Rivoli but up a couple of blocks. This one has a mix of languages where Smith is majority of English from what I have seen when in there.

Give a look at http://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/

Don%26#39;t forget that a bookstore in France is a librairie. A Library is called a bibliotheque in French. I would try FNAC in le Forum des Halles

I always go to a FNAC.
Meanwhile, it is sad news to say that Brentano%26#39;s, the main American bookstore in Paris on avenue de l%26#39;Opéra, has closed forever.

Thanks for the replies.
As Peju is a FNAC prizewinner, I%26#39;ll try a FNACshop.

My favorite is Gibert on bd Saint-Michel (with rue Racine), probably the best stocked one in Paris, with actual booksellers manning it. Fnac is OK, but you are basically on your own, and the general literature section is not very exciting.
