Is it safe to bike to Villefranche-sur-mer and St. Jean Cap Ferrat?

Cycling is a national sport in France. French motorists are accustomed to making allowance for cyclists, and the main route to Villefranche is a cycleway part of the way. So the odds look pretty good.
Of course not all motorists are French. And there are the boy-racers from Monaco in their performance cars looking for a bit of open road.
So is cycling %26quot;safe%26quot;? On balance safer than in most big cities, but nothing is guaranteed safe. Not even walking.

Central Nice to Villefranche requires climbing a substantial hill with constant overtaking traffic then, as NiceLife says, a road side bike path for about half a mile. If you get as far as Villefranche go along by the beach and climb the steps at the eastern end, then go along the quiet road past the villas and turn right. You can then amble about on the cap with very little traffic. If you are a nervous cyclist my advice would be to take the bike on the train to Villefranche and cycle from there.
