Enfants Rouges (covered market) in Marais

39 rue de Bretagne~ Is this a good market?

I will be staying in the 4th next to Pompidou Centre and would like to go to some good fresh food markets that are in this general area. Going in late Sept, early Oct. Other than the Bastille market, any others in the area I should know about? Thanks.

We were led there while on a Paris Walks tour of the Marais in the afternoon this past April. It is off the touristy streets so mostly locals were there it appeared to us. It%26#39;s well worth a visit but I don%26#39;t know what time it opens. I think there is a website or else you can google it (red children%26#39;s market, so named for the red jumpers the school children wore when a school was on the premises) for more information. I plan to return on our next visit.

Definitely worth it, you can do some web searching and find several articles and photos on it

It isn%26#39;t a huge one but it definitely is worth. There is a nice cafe (Cafe Charlot) that is worth a stop to relax before / after shopping. Also, I recall there is a market that is near the Mairie of the 4eme (across the street from the Square Bourg-Tibourg) - Place Baudoyer

It%26#39;s not my favorite market, but if it%26#39;s your local neighborhood, it is fine.

Enfants Rouges is right off rue de Bretagne, a great market street. I prefer rue de Bretagne over the Enfants Rouges for choice. There%26#39;s a Charcutier there, %26quot;Traiteur Ramella%26quot; that makes the most amazing prepared delicacies and has a decent choice of the most popular French cheeses.

We live directly next to the Centre Pompidou and get all our fruits/vegies from %26quot;Le Palais du Fruit%26quot; on rue Montorgueil and meats from the best boucher in Paris, %26quot;Le Boucheris Provins%26quot; at 27 rue Rambuteau, another decent market street. Rambuteau and rue Montorgueil are much closer to where you%26#39;re staying than rue de Bretagne/Enfants Rouge.

Kerouac2, what are your favorite markets? I want to visit many, many markets in different parts of Paris when I am there in November. Thank you!

My favorite markets are the Faubourg Saint Denis for variety and an exotic Turkish touch, Montorgueil for the typical Parisian experience, and Barbès for the very cheapest prices and the exotic feeling of being in Algiers rather than Paris.

However, I would never make a special trip to any of them, and I really don%26#39;t know of very many Parisians who leave their own neighborhood for normal market shopping. You always find what you need one way or another, unless you need something really unusual.

My own market is on rue l%26#39;Olive in the 18th, and it is a small market made even smaller by the renovation of the old Baltard building that won%26#39;t be ready until about February 2010 (although they had promised that renovations would be finished and that all of the merchants would be back in place by Christmas). The merchants are currently set up on a square a few steps from the market building.

Just like everybody else, I am anxiously waiting to see what the new covered market will be like.

Thank you, and I hope your new local market is ready to open ahead of schedule!
