We are travelling to France for the first time and for one week. ..it is not where but with whom! That being said, however, I think I might be helpful if you could give me more info. I assume that if it is your first trip, you would like to spend most of your time in Paris. A cottage just isnt an option unless you plan a long train ride and that just doesnt make sense. You might want to rent an apartment. If so as a first timer I would be sure to rent one from an agency that can give you a lot of back up if things go wrong. What is your budget? What time of year are you planning your trip? ..all these thing might help me.

For a week in Paris an apartment rental is a great option. Less expensive than a hotel with much more space and the bonus of kitchen facilities.

Vacation In Paris is a good place to start. They are a NY based agency that is pretty well liked around TA. http://vacationinparis.com/

There are other options also (at both ends of the spectrum - budget to really high end).

we are a lesbian couple not that we are poster children mind you for the gay community. We want to stay in a cozy place no more than say 175 dollar a night. We love flea markets, antique shops, good food. We would like to seea few monuments and take a boat ride on a river and perhaps a baloon ride. Is this possible and what do you recommend? I really appreciate your help ! This trip is a dream of my life and at 50 years old, I am very excited. Oh and we are coming from september 23 till September 29. Thanks so much.

The Marais (4th Arrondisement) is probably the center of G/L/T life in Paris, it is also the home of the orthodox jewish community - so it is an eclectic yet tolerent area...... There are clubs, shops, cafes, several museums and the beautiful Place des Vosges, etc. It%26#39;s also not too far from the Canal St. Martin and Montmartre.

There are also numerous apartments available for rent in the Marais, although for a first time visitor, unless you speak pretty fluent French, I would recommend a hotel to bridge the language/culture gap - it%26#39;s just easier to have someone to turn to for help on a first trip. Making reservations for you for dinner, pointing you in the right direction to a Metro stop, or a laundromat, etc...... Either apartment or hotel, you should be able to find a place to stay within your budget, I%26#39;d just recommend a hotel.

Boat ride is no problem, there are several companies to choose from although I%26#39;ve never done it myself. I seem to recall there used to be a balloon ride in the Tuilleries - don%26#39;t know how much it is though.

Anyway, to stay in a quaint cottage would almost require you to stay outside of Paris. You%26#39;d spend a lot of time commuting into the city - most first-timers are better off staying in the central 8 arrondisements to be closer to the sights.

I%26#39;d vote for the Marais.......

Bon Voyage!

Oh! September 2009?

You%26#39;d better get a move on for your accomodations, I though the end of September is fashion season, rooms may be hard to come by.

Search %26quot;Marais Hotels%26quot; (top left) to get a selection, but you%26#39;re going to have to move pretty quickly! I planned a last minute trip this time 2 years ago and we had to scramble for a room at a decent rate!

Bon Chance!

Definitely the Marais would be a good choice. Given the late decision, you should look through some direct rentals to owners

http://www.flipkey.com

are sites that (generally) connect you direct to owners. There are a few agencies that post there too. They both have calendars and you can see what is available.

For other agencies in addition to Vacation in Paris, I%26#39;d suggest these which we%26#39;ve used:

http://www.villeetvillage.com

http://www.athomeinfrance.com

This is a good site focusing on Marais hotels and they have nice choices
