Leaving Monday, any last minute tips?

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are leaving for our first trip to Paris on Monday! We are very excited to say the least.

We have everything that I can think of booked. Flights (obv lol), apartment in Marais, train tickets to Amsterdam (for our second leg of the trip) and our tickets for Rock En Seine. We have bought a few Euros from our bank yesterday, and know which atms to use and what taxi to take from the airport. We are going to wing it itinerary wise as we have a week to get in the places we really want to see ie Eiffel Towel, the Louvre, the catacombs, and the Père Lachaise Cemetery, to name a few.

I have been scouring the TA forums for about 2 months, checking almost everyday for bits of information that will be handy. I think I have everything, but I was just wondering if anyone has some tips for travelling that might not get mentioned too often.

I can already tell we%26#39;ll need to book a second trip!

Thanks in advance!

Seriously, your trip sounds perfect. You%26#39;re making it easy on yourselves by taking a taxi from the airport, you%26#39;re staying in a great neighborhood, you have a week (!!!), and you%26#39;ve left yourselves time to %26quot;wing it.%26quot; I can%26#39;t think of anything to comment on except DON%26#39;T RETHINK THIS!!!! It%26#39;s already perfect.

You%26#39;ll love it all. (One MINOR suggestion: You may want to consider a guided group walking tour thru Lachaise and possibly a recorded headset tour for the Louvre. The tour of Lachaise will help because it%26#39;s so meandering. And the Louvre is, duh, huge.) But again, you done good.

Hi Julia

I leave for Paris on Monday too! I am meeting friends already there, have a great time ! who is on at the Rock en Seine ?

|||

You know I never even considered a walking tour, that%26#39;s a great idea! I was just on a site that had a virtual tour of it and I could see getting lost in there pretty easily.

Thank you for the kind words, I have spent a lot of time trying to fill my brain with knowledge. If it wasn%26#39;t for TA I%26#39;d never even think that renting an apartment was possible!

We are going to Rock en Seine to see Faith No More on Saturday night, pretty much the reason for out trip! They have yet to announce any dates in North America, so we thought why not?

In case anyone reading this is going, if you see a Canadian girl drooling over Mike Patton, chances are its me! lol

The one almost free thing I suggest is to take a bottle of wine, preferably champagne, out onto the Pont des Arts one night at about 8:45 or 9:45. This gives you enough time to find a seat or a place by the rail and to open the wine and to locate the Eiffel Tower for it%26#39;s 5 minutes of twinkling on the hour. It%26#39;s a nice, intimate activity. Just you and 1/2 of everyone else in Paris.

Drinking wine and alcohol is not allowed in the streets and parks of Paris. The Pont des Arts is especially mentioned in the latest amendment to the law (no drinking between 4 pm and 7 am). The application of the law is left at the discretion of the police. They will turn a blind eye if you are obviously nice quiet tourists and will joke with you but they can also be sticky if they want too.

Besides the law, there is something terribly terribly gauche about drinking in the street.. just find a nice cafe terrace and drink there, using proper glasses and all.

Have a wonderful time!

You%26#39;re going to have a great trip! My wife and I just spent 8 nights there and had a wonderful time.

It sounds like you already have things planned well and it%26#39;s good to %26quot;wing it%26quot;. Buy a good guide book, have a good map, you can see the Metro map as well ahead of time but really it%26#39;s great.

Staying in an apartment is the best way to go in Paris. We stayed in a wonderful apartment and loved it!

Get a weekly metro pass when you arrive. Make sure before you arrive to make it easier you can bring a passport size photo (each of you) so you can use it for the pass.

Also, something we love doing since it%26#39;s so hot out is to put a big bottle of Evian water (plastic bottle) in the freezer the night before. We literally walked around about 10 hours a day and it was great always having cold water. You%26#39;ll have that many places don%26#39;t have really COLD water in their fridges so it was always great. Throughout the day we would just buy bottled Evian water and pour it into the big bottle and always had ice cold water.

One of our best moments there was packing a picnic and having a dinner at dusk on the lawns of the Trocadero right in front of the water fountain facing the Eiffel Tower. I can guarantee you won%26#39;t find a more romantic spot to have dinner.

Have a great trip! Paris is my favorite city in the world and still have hopes of possibly moving here in the future (at least part of the year).

Since you are also going to Amsterdam try to eat at an Indonesian resturant and have a rifstafel (sounds like rice table when you say it). Delicious
