First of all do you mean the Loir Valley or the Loire Valley. They are quite different. The Loire Valley is generally said to be the stetch of the Loire river between Orleans and Angers, and the countryside on each side.

The Loir Valley is smaller and less well known, and is the countryside through which the Loir river flows on its way to join the Loire at Angers.

When one talks of the famous chateaux like Chambord, Amboise, Chenonceaux, they are in the Loire Valley.

I suspect therefore that you mean the Loire Valley, not the Loir Valley.

Secondly, you need to give us some idea of what you want to see or do in your day in the Loire Valley. Visiting Chateaux, seeing some towns like Amboise, visiting vine yards etc?

Although there are day tours from Paris, it is about two and a half hours drive down the motorway to somewhere central in the Loire Valley like Tours; whereas you can take the TGV train from Paris to Tours, which takes one hour, and then take a minibus tour from Tours.

Yes, I know it is confusing with Loir and Loire, and now tours and Tours.

thanks, I do mean loire where the chateaux are.

And you think it is better to take the train to Tours and then the tour from there to te castles than to take the tour straight from Paris?

Living in the Loire Valley I have to say that I have done neither tour, I can just get in my car and drive to most of the chateaux in under 1 hour.

However, if I wanted to do a tour from Paris, I would take the TGV to Tours, it%26#39;s quicker, you can walk about on the train, go to the toilet, have a drink in the buffet carriage; in fact far more civilized.

And the TGV train is a fun experience in and of itself and very pleasant.

We took the TGV to St Pierre des Corps, which is the TGV station very close to Tours. We rented a car from AVIS, right next door to the train station, went to 2 chateaux, used our handheld GPS to get back to the station and took the train back to Paris. We did do this on a Saturday to avoid rush hour traffic.

But if you want to do a tour, I would definitely recommend taking the TGV and starting the tour in Tours.

Thanks guys

I am definetly doing that.
