You know, it%26#39;s been said here a thousand times, but if budget is an issue for travelers, they%26#39;d do better to eat away from the main tourist attractions in Paris (or any other tourist destination, for that matter).

If you eat almost any place near the Eiffel Tower, you%26#39;re going to pay dearly for mediocre food. There are very few exceptions, but can be found on r. St. Dominique. But even there, the restaurants are not particularly %26quot;cheap%26quot;.

Much depends on what one considers cheap. There are quite a few places that have high-quality cuisine for very reasonable prices. There%26#39;s Le Florimond,on the rue Motte Piquet, near the foot of the rue Cler (40 euro if you order the house wine). Le P%26#39;tit Troquet on the rue de l%26#39;Exposition (about the same price). And the Bistrot de 7eme on the rue de la Tour Maubourg, just north of the rue de Grenelle, is less than 30.

I think all of these places are cheap, considering the quality. And they all have friendly service.

I think Happy had in mind la Fontaine de Mars (about 40), whuch is said to be very good. I haven%26#39;t visited it yet.

For a filling and economical meal, I always recommend Chez Papa, which specializes in the food of Southwest France (goose, duck, lots of butter, etc.).

Nearest to the Eiffel Tower would be their location at rue de la Croix Nivert in the 15th.

They do not take reservations. You wait in line if you arrive after 8 p.m. and it is worth it.

Kerouac, I beg to differ: chez Papa is really the caricature of bad, overpriced, franchise food with a tacky decor. I used to live next to the one on avenue Gambetta, and have never been convinced by it. Lately, I tried the one on rue Marcadet, and it was a total disaster, expensive on top of that. As chains go, I would rather stick with Chez Clément, bland as it is, but it%26#39;s rather safe. But in general, I would avoid franchises.

Food of southern France and lots of butter are 7 words that do not go well together :-)

Rendezvousparis... on the subject of Chez Clement... Can you suggest something of a similar menu that IS better? I really liked their menu... typical things and something for everyone, really.... BUT, as you just said, it was sort of bland. I loved the location in the 6th, and the service and wine good... but the food... not really something I would write home about. I DO have to say, their creme brulee was amazing!

Two great bistros are in the 7th arr.

Chez l%26#39;ami Jean is outstanding, with Stephane Jego being one of the most talked-about chefs in Paris. Best non-Michelin starred place in Paris, in my humble opinion.

L%26#39;Auberge Bressange is a great classic bistro serving great Burgundy cuisine.

Hylasgirl, what kind of food / atmosphere / arrondissement are you looking for?

%26quot;Chez Papa%26quot; is south-western of France cuisine made by pakistanese people. A Parisian concept. I personnally enjoy it, and if you%26#39;re a big eater, a super papa salad should fill you up.

Near the Eiffel Tower, I liked to go to the Café du Marché (38 rue... Cler, sorry). It was 10 years ago, when I has doing my military service nearby, maybe it was less touristy back then, prices may have gone up.
