You just opened a thread that will likely run and run and..as each person has a different idea.

What IS your idea of a romantic place? a luxury historical mansion with dozen of servants, huge bouquets of flowers, gourmet food, an orchestra?? or a tiny cottage by a lake with wild flowers all around, wild birds and animals, an organic vegetable garden and a few free range chickens, a cow ..

Obviously you already have a special person with you as it is hard to be romantic alone.

Any place outside of Paris is too difficult to get into the city for regular sight seeing.

Staying in the center of the city is usually best for a first time visit (the 6th, 5th districts (arrondissments in French) or on the island Ile St. Louis best fit most Americans idea of what Paris should be like and are close to most things.

Most people then take one or two day trips outside the city. (There are a range of options depending on what you want to do).

Any of the major guide books will give you a pretty good idea of what the options are. Searching around the Paris forum here will provide more information.
